Sir Ian McKellen's portrayal in the Lord of the Rings films was excellent, and is probably how most people picture the Grey Pilgrim now, but my Gandalf will always be this one, as voiced by John Huston in the 1977 Rankin-Bass classic. In Gandalf, Tolkien took Merlin and made Dumbledore possible, establishing the grumpy avuncular mage as an indelible fantasy archetype.
