Favorite Fictional Characters, #234: Kesuke Miyagi

Writer's picture: Joe PaceJoe Pace

"Wax on, wax...oh, forget it."

War hero. Widower. Maintenance man. Karate guru. Mr. Miyagi was all of these, a wise and competent teacher, and a loyal friend. He fights through his own loss to form a lasting bond with Daniel-San LaRusso, taking the bullied teen under his wing as a virtual adopted son. Miyagi's skill as an instructor, both in martial artistry and life skills, are evident, and he also manages to sucker the lad into doing most of the work around the place. Paint the fence, wax the car, etc. Pretty slick. Plus, he can catch a fly with chopsticks and trim a mean bonsai tree.
