Favorite Non-Fiction Books, #57: Charlie Brown ‘Cyclopedia

Older than the Reagan Administration. And smarter, too.

This set of reference books was my first, and remains deeply important to me. Published in 1980 (which makes them older than my wife), this 15-volume set features the Peanuts gang explaining such varied topics as the solar system, internal combustion engines, world cultures, genetics, and photosynthesis. Sure, much of it is outdated, but it holds up remarkably well. The commentary from Lucy and Snoopy and Chuck (and my spirit character, Woodstock) provides context invaluable to a kid, and I devoured all of these books repeatedly during my childhood.

I love that they survived intact for my own kids to enjoy, and they have. I hope their own kids can say the same someday.
