New England Sports 366, #71: Cindy Blodgett

I’m up in Bangor, Maine, and so my thoughts turn to Cindy Blodgett. A native of Vacationland, Blodgett was a hugely successful high school athlete at Lawrence High (four basketball state titles in four years and Miss Maine Basketball in 1994) before joining the women’s hoop program in Orono and dominating. More than once, I saw her dominate our UNH Wildcats. She led UMaine to the NCAA tournament four times, scoring over 3,000 career points as a four-time All-American at guard.

Blodgett went in the first round of the WNBA draft after graduating in 1998 and played four pro years. She returned home at coach of the UMaine women from 2007-2011, though her record from the sideline was never a match for her record as a player. She’s in Rhode Island now, as an athletic administrator and coach, but she still belongs to Maine and always will.
