Lee pitched for eight teams in his Hall of Fame pitching career, including the Red Sox from 1988 to 1990. He led the league in saves four times, and was an all-star seven times. What I remember most about him is that he always seemed exhausted on the mound. He’d come in for a save opportunity at Fenway and his tongue would already be on the ground from the walk in from the bullpen. He was effective, historically so. And yet what I remember most about him is how tired he always seemed, even as he struck guys out to close the game.
I’m tired today. Bone tired. And so you get Lee Smith. I feel you, buddy.
